Frontal or closure? Both create a natural-looking hairline, but they differ in coverage, styling freedom and upkeep. Here's how they compare.
What is a lace closure?
A closure is a smaller piece of lace, often 4x4 or 5x5 inches, that sits at the top front of the head. It gives a natural-looking parting within that area, usually a middle or slightly side part.
What is a lace frontal?
A frontal covers the hairline from ear to ear. A 13x4 frontal, for example, is 13 inches across and 4 inches deep. Because the lace runs the full front of the head, you can part your hair across a wider area and style it back.
Side by side
- Coverage: a closure covers a small central area; a frontal covers ear to ear.
- Parting: a closure allows limited parting options; a frontal allows more freedom (middle, side, deep side).
- Styling: frontals are better for pulled-back looks; closures suit simpler, low-maintenance styles.
- Installation: closures are generally easier for beginners; frontals may need more care to lay the lace and blend the hairline.
- Maintenance: more lace means more to protect, so frontals usually need a little more care.
Which should you choose?
- Choose a closure if you want a simple, low-maintenance style with a fixed parting.
- Choose a frontal if you love switching your parting and want the most natural-looking hairline across the whole front.
Tips for a natural-looking lace
- Choose a lace colour that's close to your skin tone, or tint it to match.
- A pre-plucked hairline saves time and looks softer.
- Try the unit on before cutting any lace.
