Density is one of the most important choices when buying a human hair wig, and one of the most confusing. Here's what the numbers mean and how to choose the right one for your look.
What is wig density?
Wig density describes how much hair is ventilated (attached) to the cap. It's shown as a percentage. Higher numbers mean more hair and more volume. There's no single industry standard, so the same percentage can look slightly different between brands, but the general guide below holds true.
Common density levels
- 130%: light/natural. Close to the fullness of most natural hair. Great for an understated, everyday look and lighter on the head.
- 150%: medium. The most popular everyday density. Fuller than natural but still believable, and easy to style.
- 180%: full. Noticeable volume and body, ideal for longer lengths and glam looks.
- 200% and above: extra full. Maximum volume for a bold, statement look. Especially flattering on long lengths, where hair can otherwise look thinner towards the ends.
How to choose
- Consider the length. Longer wigs spread the same amount of hair over more length, so many people choose a higher density for 22 inches and up to keep the ends looking full.
- Consider the texture. Waves and curls naturally look fuller than straight hair at the same density.
- Think about the occasion. Lower densities read as more natural day to day; higher densities give drama for events and photos.
- Think about comfort. More hair means slightly more weight and warmth.
- Consider the hairline. A well-plucked hairline keeps even a full-density wig looking natural at the front.
