How to Care for a Human Hair Wig: Wash, Style & Store

A good human hair wig is an investment. With the right routine, it stays soft, shiny and beautiful for much longer. Here's a simple care guide.

Washing

  • Wash when you notice product build-up, dullness or odour. How often depends on how often you wear it and how much product you use.
  • Detangle gently before washing.
  • Use lukewarm water and a sulphate-free shampoo. Smooth the shampoo downwards instead of scrubbing or bunching the hair.
  • Follow with a moisturising conditioner from mid-lengths to ends, keeping it away from the lace and knots.
  • Rinse thoroughly in a downward direction.

Drying

  • Blot with a microfibre towel. Don't rub.
  • Air-dry on a wig stand where possible. If you use a blow-dryer, use a heat protectant and low heat.

Detangling and styling

  • Use a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends and working up to the roots.
  • Always apply heat protectant before curling or straightening, and keep tools at a moderate temperature.
  • Avoid heavy oils and too much product near the lace.

Protecting the lace

  • Handle the lace gently. It's delicate.
  • Remove adhesives carefully with a proper remover. Never pull the lace off.
  • Try your unit on and plan your look before cutting the lace.

Storage and everyday habits

  • Store on a wig stand or in a satin bag to keep its shape and reduce tangles.
  • Avoid sleeping in your wig, or wear a satin bonnet or scarf if you must.
  • Avoid chlorine and salt water, which can dry the hair out.
